Eligible prospective postgraduate research candidates who wish to apply to a research degree in аIJʹÙÍø Faculty & Justice must submit an expression of interest (EOI). The process must be followed before submitting a formal application with the Graduate Research School.
The EOI process allows us to complete a preliminary assessment of your application and identify whether an appropriate supervisor and resources are available.ÌýFollowing the EOI process will save you a lot of time. If you are eligible the EOI process will also allow our expert postgraduate administrator to point out matters to consider in making your formal online application and whether or not you might be successful in a scholarship application.
Once the preliminary assessment of your eligibility has been completed, our postgraduate administrator will pass on your EOI to one of the Post-Graduate Co-ordinators (PGCs) in our faculty. There are three PGCs in the faculty, one for each School. The PGC will then be the main person, along with your supervisors, who advises about your application and any scholarship you might apply for.
Preparing an EOI and working towards a formal online application
-
Ensure you satisfy the admission criteria (under determine your eligibility) for your chosen research degree. You must also ensure you meet the Ð°IJʹÙÍø English Language Requirements for this Faculty.
If you require a scholarship to undertake your research degree, please read the information at Ð°IJʹÙÍø Scholarships.
-
Use the Find a Supervisor database to search for a likely supervisor, if you have not done this already.Ìý
If and when you approach your supervisor, it helps greatly if you have already completed a draft of your Research Proposal. This should be in the form and answering the questions asked for in point (4) below. You should include this draft Research Proposal with your EOI. If you are invited to submit a formal online application, you may have a short period of working with your potential supervisor to improve this draft proposal before the аIJʹÙÍø GRS application deadline.
-
Please complete the expression of interest in higher degree research candidature form and compile all supporting documentation as listed on the EOI form's checklist.
a. Download and complete an EOI form

-
If appropriate, provide evidence of your English ability, such as a recent IELTS or TOEFL result. Include previous study in English or of Australian residency. Find out more about Ð°IJʹÙ꿉۪s English language requirements.
Your EOI Form and the accompanying documents should then be emailed to j.jarrett@unsw.edu.
Please note that the EOI assessment period can take four to six weeks to complete and can only begin once all supporting documentation has been provided.

Any EOIs received later than ten weeks prior to the Graduate Research School's application deadlines cannot be guaranteed processing in time for relevant scholarship rounds.
Next steps
On receipt of your EOI form and all supporting documents from the postgraduate administrator, the relevant PGC will review your application to confirm your eligibility for entry, and that appropriate supervision and resources are available.Ìý
If the School you are applying to determines that you are eligible and that supervision and resources are available, you will be invited by email to submit a formal application.Ìý
Your formal online application must include this invitation to apply email from the school as the 'proof of contact'.
It is important to note that an invitation to apply does not constitute an offer for admission to study at аIJʹÙÍø.
For detailed instructions on how to submit your formal online application and more information on admission and scholarship deadlines, go to Ð°IJʹÙÍø Research.
Timelines for assessment
