Combine your passion for Food Science and Humanitarian Engineering!

Food Science and Technology expertise plays an important role in the humanitarian field. Opportunities to create immediate real-world impact could include making sure that good quality and nutritionally diverse foods are available in emergencies; addressing nutrient and calorie deficiencies associated with extreme poverty and childhood stunting and, working on solutions in partnerships that support local businesses and agriculture where possible. 

ճ minor will give you the opportunity to combine your skills as a Food Scientist and apply it into real humanitarian practice to address problems relating to inequalities and lack-of-access in alignment with the  and international humanitarian relief efforts.

Humanitarian Science and Technology Minor - Program Structure

The program structure for the Humanitarian Science and Technology Minor is as follows:

 students must take a minimum of 24 UoC from the courses listed below to complete the Humanitarian Science and Technology Minor.

  • Students must take the following 6UoC core course:

     - Fundamentals of Humanitarian Engineering

  • Students must take the following 6UoC core course:

     - Humanitarian Engineering Project *

    With approval, students may substitute this course with other suitable humanitarian/thesis projects. Examples could include: a product design project developed within the CEIC4007, CEIC4008 thesis courses. Please contact Jayashree Arcot to discuss options to substitute a course for ENGG4102*

  • Students must take at least one of the following 6UoC core courses:

     - Global Development in Practice: Concepts and Practices for Inclusive Development
     - Disaster and Society
     - International Development
     - Local Politics of Development

    Note: these can be taken as General Education courses

  • Students may take up to 6UoC of the following elective courses:

     - Sustainable Energy for Developing Countries
     - Food and Health Security
